DIEBOLD, MASTERCARD TO PILOT CARDLESS ATM SOLUTIONS

Diebold Nixdorf is teaming up with MasterCard to pilot test two cash provision services — MasterCard Cash Pick-Up and Cardless ATM powered by MasterCard.

With MasterCard Cash Pick-Up, banks can enable their ATMs to deliver cash easily and securely to any authenticated consumer — banked or unbanked — without the use of a card, a press release said.

Cardless ATM powered by MasterCard allows accountholders to withdraw cash from the nearest ATM using their mobile banking app. Once at the ATM, users can quickly complete the authentication process and receive their cash.

The majority of the transaction is conducted through the app and the cloud, protecting sensitive information throughout the process.

“As a technology company, we are always considering what the future can bring, and today we have a great opportunity with Diebold Nixdorf to define the next wave of digital products to the ATM channel,” Daniel Goodman, MasterCard senior vice president of ATM product management, said in the release. “By bringing together the MasterCard network and Diebold Nixdorf’s large global scale, we can help move the ATM industry towards a globally scalable standard for driving digital innovation in the ATM channel.”

Chinese banks report growth in mobile payments volumes

Chinese banks posted robust growth in mobile payments in the first quarter of this year, according to the People’s Bank of China (PBOC).

Banking institutions handled 70.8 trillion yuan (11.1 trillion U.S. dollars) in mobile payments in the period, up 16.8 percent year on year, the central bank data showed.

Around 10.7 billion payments were made through the banks’ mobile services in the first quarter, an increase of 17.8 percent year on year, the PBOC said.

China’s mobile payment sector has seen rapid development, driven by improved Internet infrastructure, increased use of mobile phones and innovation of financial services.

In the first quarter, bank card transactions in China rose 12.6 percent from a year earlier to 220.8 trillion yuan, while the number of bank cards in use went up 4.8 percent to 7 billion by the end of March, according to the PBOC.

PayPal and Google bind payment rails

PayPal and Google are extending their relationship across the search giant’s entire ecosystem, including Gmail, YouTube, Google Pay and Google Store.

The deeper integration between the two companies will enable users to adopt PayPal as a an embedded payments option across all Google products and services, including for P2P transfers.

It follows an earlier partnership between PayPal and Android Pay and builds on the wider ties that PayPal has been building with leading payment networks, financial institutions and technology companies.

Now, when a user adds PayPal to their Google Play account, it will automatically enable their linked PayPal account and make it available as a payment option across popular Google services “with only minimal setup”.

EMVCO CREATES ROYALTY-FREE MARK TO PROMOTE USE OF QR CODES

EMVCo, the global technical body that manages EMV specifications, has introduced a QR payment trademark designed to promote the global interoperability and use of EMV QR code payments.

EMVCo has released reproduction requirements for the mark and a licensing structure that allows any organization that uses an EMV QR code solution to also use the mark at no cost, a press release said.

According to EMVCo, QR codes are increasingly being used to facilitate mobile payments at the point of sale. Last year, the organization published specifications to address two QR code payment use-cases:

  • Consumer-presented — consumers display the QR code on their mobile device and the merchant uses an optical scanner to read the code.
  • Merchant-presented — the merchant displays the QR code and consumers use their mobile device to scan the code.
  • The QR payment mark can be used to inform consumers that a merchant accepts these types of payment solutions.

The QR payment mark can also be used as an application indicator on a consumer mobile device when initiating a consumer-presented transaction.

A royalty-free trademark license agreement and reproduction requirements are available in EMVCo’s Trademark Centre.

“The development of a uniform, recognizable QR payment mark that can be used on a royalty-free basis is an important step towards providing a universally consistent experience for both merchants and consumers,” EMVCo executive Committee Chair Jack Pan said in the release.

Visa Expands Real-Time Push Payments Platform In Canada

Building upon its global network for domestic and cross-border payments to businesses and consumers, Visa is expanding Visa Direct in Canada. Peoples Payment Solutions — working with TELUS Health and Payment Solutions — will be among the first companies in the country to implement Visa Direct’s capabilities to enable real-time payments, Visa said in an announcement.

Brian Weiner, VP and head of Product, Visa Canada, said the expansion is an important milestone in the company’s mission to transform how consumers and businesses around the world pay each other.

“Companies like Peoples Payment Solutions and TELUS Health and Payment Solutions are helping us modernize payments in industries like healthcare and insurance by creating a faster and more seamless payment experience for their customers,” Weiner said in the announcement. “Visa Direct is changing the way we use cards by reimagining payments for the digital age.”

Fund disbursements represent a major market in Canada. According to recent research by the Aite Group, fund disbursements to consumers and small businesses are an approximately CAD $1.1 trillion opportunity. The study also found that 62 percent of consumers and 96 percent of merchants would likely opt in for a real-time payment method if that option was available.

Once in market, Peoples Payment Solutions and TELUS’ Health Benefits Management platform, powered by Visa Direct, will enable push payments directly into a customer’s Visa debit account in real time. Visa said the feature will significantly speed up fund disbursements for patients who are, for example, submitting benefit claims from healthcare professionals, shortening the time to instant reimbursement versus waiting several days to a week for payout.

“Working with innovative companies like Visa and Peoples Payment Solutions allows us to lead the way in providing an even better, faster benefit claims experience for our insurance partners and, ultimately, plan members,” Luc Vilandré, VP and COO, TELUS Health and Payment Solutions, said in the announcement. “Leveraging the power of real-time technology to disburse funds instantly is far more efficient for patients and removes an unnecessary layer of complexity, enhancing the overall benefits experience.”

In addition, Visa Direct enables businesses to pay freelancers, contractors and other small businesses in real time. The platform also allows for business-to-consumer payments and person-to-person payments, which has been live in the Canadian market since 2013. Beyond Canada, the Visa Direct platform is currently available in more than 200 markets around the world.
