Survey: Consumers wary of biometric payments

Sixty-one percent of consumers feel that providing companies with their fingerprint and iris information put their personal identity information at risk, according to “Vital Insights into Biometric Payments Adoption,” a report from Transaction Network Services.

In the last year, 15% of adults have made a biometric payment, including a quarter of 18 to 24 year olds. However, many consumers remain wary, especially male consumers in the United States and the U.K. In Australia, women reported security concerns.

However, adults in the US increased biometric payments usage slightly since TNS’ last survey two years ago. Usage in the last year has been greatest among U.K. adults.

Looking ahead, 68% of consumers believe biometric payments will become more commonplace in the next 2-5 years. Fingerprints were chosen as the most popular identifier overall, the study revealed.

MORE THAN HALF BILLION CHINESE PAY BY MOBILE PHONES

China saw fast expansion in the number of mobile payment users last year, reaching 527 million at the end of 2017, according to an internet industry report.

Total online payment users reached 531 million by the end of last year, up 11.9 percent from a year earlier, the report showed.

Online shopping saw a transaction volume of 7.2 trillion yuan (about 1.1 trillion U.S. dollars) in 2017, up 32.2 percent from 2016.

The growth came against the backdrop of an expanding group of internet users, especially those accessing the internet through mobile phones.

There were 772 million internet users in China at the end of 2017, and 97.5 percent of them were mobile internet users, according to the report.

The growth of China’s mobile payment sector is driven by improved internet infrastructure and innovation.

China has the world’s largest 4G network and continues to strive for further expansion, with the goal of adding 450,000 new 4G base stations this year to improve signal coverage in buildings, elevators, and other indoor spaces, as well as on railroads and expressways.

Apart from online shopping, mobile payments have expanded into stores and restaurants and are now used to pay for just about everything, making China the world’s largest mobile payment market.

Aeon and Fujitsu pilot palm vein biometric payments

Aeon Financial Services is teaming up with Fujitsu to trial a biometric system that lets Japanese shoppers pay for their groceries with their hands.

Aeon’s credit card unit is tapping Fujitsu’s palm vein biometric authentication technology for the pilot, which will involve Aeon staffers and begin in September at a number of Ministop convenience stores.

Customers who register for the service will add their palm vein pattern to their Aeon card information. Then, at the checkout they will enter their birthdate before holding their palm over a special reader.

Aeon says that it picked Fujitsu’s technology for its biometric test because palm vein authentication is both very accurate and, because it is contactless, sanitary.

The technology has been used at bank ATMs in Japan for more than a decade and has also been tapped for corporate PC access and room entry management.

CONTACTLESS CARDS ACCOUNTED FOR OVER HALF THE 2.3BN PAYMENT CHIP CARDS SHIPPED IN 2017

The Smart Payment Association (SPA), the trade body of the smart payments industry revealed top level findings from its 2017 annual review of the smart payments market.

Data collected by the SPA from its members show 2.3 billion payment chip cards were shipped globally in 2017. Following adjustments to accommodate shipment data provided by new members, the SPA calculates this represents a year-on-year growth of almost 4% on 2017 figures.

In line with the growing maturity in most global markets, shipment volumes in China and the United States continue to normalize following the significant EMV roll-out programs of recent years.

Once again, a sustained growth in card shipments was observed in India, where the transition to EMV is currently underway. Demand across the South Asia region also continued to surge ahead, most notably in Indonesia where year-on-year shipment volumes more than doubled.

The 2017 global shipment figures also highlight the escalating popularity of ‘tap and go’ transactions, with contactless payment cards accounting for more than 50% of shipments in most regions, and over 70% in a growing number of territories.

“The continued acceleration of contactless card shipments is being fuelled by a strong consumer appetite for convenient ways to conduct small transactions across Europe, the Middle East, Africa, Latin America and Asia Pacific, supported by the wider deployment of contactless POS terminals and by shemes’ mandates,” comments Julien Drouet, President, SPA.
